Korea-Seoul-Palace - Gyeongbokgung


Gyeongbokgung, or the palace of Felicitous Blessing, was the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). It opened in 1395, the fourth year of the reign of Taejo, the founding monarch of Joseon. The palace attained all necessary facilities and systems commensurate with its status as Joseon's primary palace during the reign of Sejong (r. 1418-1450).

It was burnt down in 1592 during the Japanese invasions and remained in ruins until extensive reconstruction was undertaken in 1868, the fifth year of Gojong. However, many of the structures were removed during the Japanese colonial rule (1908-1945).

LG Group founder In Hwoi, Koo set LG history in motion with the establishment of the Lak Hui Chemical Industrial Corp. in 1947. During those formative years, the company emphasized the principle of creating harmony among people. In 1952, Lak Hui (currently LG Chem) became the first Korean company to enter the plastics industry. Namdaemun Market, located in the very center of Seoul, is the biggest traditional market in Korea selling children's clothing, men & women's clothing, daily miscellaneous goods, kitchenware and local and imported products.

Most shops have their own factories and make the products themselves offering both wholesale and retail prices which enable visitors to purchase various shopping items at extremely inexpensive prices.

Korea-Seoul-Accommodation - Youth Hostel

Currently there are 52 hostels in Korea nationwide. Hostels are located in famous cities and regions - from tourist sites and downtown areas to places that are difficult to reach.

It is a good idea to make a reservation beforehand. Generally, hostels are very large and offer facilities comparable to deluxe hotels. Thus, the price varies considerably from 10,000 won (for a single room) to 160,000 won (for a family room).

Persons possessing a Hostelling International Card can receive discounts of up to 20-30%. Hostelling International Cards are available at various Youth Hostels Association offices around the world.

In Korea, you can get one from the Korea Youth Hostels Association Office for 20,000 won (15,000 won if under 25 years old).

Korea-Seoul-Shopping - Myeong-dong

Located in the heart of Seoul, Myeongdong is a representative shopping district in Korea. It also houses the headquarters of banks and securities brokers, and many Western and traditional restaurants. Compared to Namdaemun and Dongdaemun Market which sell products at low prices, most shops in Myeongdong deal with mid-level price items.

The main street in Myeongdong is lined with quality brand name shops, while mid-class brand name shops and no-name brand shops are located in the side alleys. Moreover, large shopping malls like Avatar or Migliore and department stores are present as well.

All kinds of shops and restaurants are densely located on the main street with lanes which resembles the shape of a chess board, so it's advisable to divide Myeongdong into a few sections in you mind and explore each section separately.

Korea-Seoul-Shopping - Insadong

Insadong and the surrounding area were the residences of Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) officials, extended royal families, and the yangban aristocratic class. The antique art shops that were established here during the Japanese Colonial Period carried everyday items of the privileged calss as these itmes became antiques in the face of modernity.

Since then, Insadong has been home to dozens of art galleries and antique shops. Insadong's narrow alleys branch out into all directions from one main street.

Korea-Seoul-Festival - Hongdae Club Day

The area surrounding Hongik University, or 'Hongdae' as it's affectionately called, is the center of Korea's youthful nightlife. Many of Seoul's idiosyncratic clubs that draws the younger set are clustered in the area, and on the last Friday of every month these clubs host a 'Club Day.'

The Hongdae Club Day was first started in 2001 as a way to promote the club business, and has since become a staple as a festival of youth. A 15,000 won ticket gains party-goers admittance into 11 clubs, with one drink on the house.

It is an ideal place for people who find dancing and music irresistiable. Head over to Hongdae Club Day on the last Friday of the month. A wild gathering of young adults from all over the world is waiting.
